So, the David Sedaris book signing last night. Quite a mob scene. The event listed as being from 7:30 - 9:30 that evening. We were there in line (or something loosely resembling a line) at 7:00 and finally walked out of the store at 11:00 pm. Four hours of standing in a cattle herd at Borders. Was it worth is?
I'd say yes. Sedaris came out at 7:30 and read two stories from his new book, as well as excerpts from his diary and taking questions from the audience. It was great hearing him read, he was very animated and fun to listen to.
I don't think we actually moved one inch in the line between 8:00 and 10:00, there was some weird time/space continuum thing going on and while people in the front of the line had to be going somewhere it sure wasn't getting any shorter. Still, we kept ourselves amused during the wait (slightly delirious from hunger, we were especially easy to amuse and found great delight in reading each other drippy excerpts from Nicholas Sparks' "The Notebook", which was on the display that we stood by for three hours). When we had finally reached the signing table David Sedaris was friendly and perky, even though he must have been exhausted. He sure looked tired. Maybe not as tired as we were, but tired.
He imprinted a funny little mushroom stamp inside Kimberly's book and drew a jack o'lantern in mine. Not sure why but now I'm very curious what everyone else in the line has on the title page of their book. I like my little jack o'lantern, it amuses me.
We ended the evening with fried food and cokes at a 24-hour diner and I felt very happy driving back home at 1:00 am. I also felt thrilled that I didn't have a job to get up and go to the next morning.
